In a post on his official Facebook account, WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart issued a response to Martha Hart, the wife of his late brother Owen, following on from Martha issuing a press release in response to Hart’s comments on a CBS Sports podcast where he noted that Martha had blocked WWE from honoring Owen in the WWE Hall of Fame and had all but erased his legacy in professional wrestling.

Bret wrote that he understands Martha’s feelings of loss, but explained that the loss that the rest of Owen’s family has dealt with since his passing in May 1999, as well as the hurt that goes with the fact that none of them have had any relationship with Owen’s children. Hart stated that Martha had seperated herself and her family from the rest of the Hart family and disavowed Owen’s legacy, but in doing so, ignored Owen’s fans.

Bret continued, noting that the Owen Hart Foundation is a wonderful charity that has raised millions of dollars and has helped many people in its 19 year history, stating that he is not disputing that whatsoever, but that he disagrees that it should be the sole outlet to remember Owen by. Bret said that his words are not just about Owen being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, but about his wrestling career, his wrestling legacy, his contribution to the business that he loved and honouring that contribution. Bret noted that Owen Hart was a world-renowned professional wrestler, part of the foundation that their family name was built on, not just in the city of Calgary, but all over the world and that for Martha to want to rewrite history, to refuse to acknowledge or recognize Owen’s great wrestling career, to brush off what Owen, Bret and his father did as “that fake stuff” is wrong.
