WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler held a press conference earlier this afternoon from his home in Memphis, Tennessee to discuss his recent heart attack and recovery. Lawler, who was wearing a WWE shirt took questions from the local media and talked about how he was feeling today and then discussed his heart attack stating that WWE’s doctor, Michael Sampson, must have the actual strength of Sampson as CPR on the night saved his life. Lawler said that his ribs are still sore from CPR being done to revive him and his throat is sore from having tubes in it, but he feels fine and has not had any chest pain since his heart attack.
Lawler noted that when he came home to Memphis, he went to see another cardiologist in the area and was told that it was as good a heart attack he had while not sounding bad, as it was in two small arteries in his heart and not major arteries, however he noted that one needed a stent and the other was cleared via an angioplasty procedure and was told that the part of the heart that he had the attack in can heal itself and get itself back to 100%. Lawler stated that when it comes to wrestling, he’s thought about what his next move is a lot and noted that it’s going to be months before he can consider a return to the ring as it will be something that himself, doctors and the WWE will monitor the situation and noted that on the night, he didn’t get the sense of really having a heart attack, as he blacked out immediately and didn’t have the pain that he witnessed his father go through and feels that the way he’s recovering, he can get back to doing what he loves faster than he actually should. Lawler said that he believes that his heart attack could be hereditary as he’s never drank alcohol or smokes and his father died from a heart attack when he was only 59, while his brother has had to undergo open heart surgery.
Lawler then said that he can’t comprehend the outpouring of support, not just in Memphis, but worldwide and noted that with all the exposure from the WWE and the rise of social media, the support has come from all corners of the world and said that anyone who knows him, knows how much he loves Memphis and then stated that his girlfriend Lauryn ran into the Memphis Mayor in a grocery store last night and the Mayor sent Lawler a get well note and said that when you are that well known from the area you live and well loved in that area, it’s hard to leave and that’s how he feels about Memphis. Lawler said that he was told by doctors that his health outlook right now is very good and that his doctor told him that the Montreal hospital he was taken to was one of the top 5 in the world and that the WWE doctors and EMT’s kept the situation from being far worse than what it was. Lawler then discussed how he was told that there was no permanent damage to his brain and that the main thing he was advised was to change his diet and exercise more and that his doctor isn’t scheduled to see him again for another 6 weeks.
Lawler then said that he’s talked to and heard from so many wrestlers since suffering a heart attack, including Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan and that there is a brotherhood that watches out for each other. He then noted that he fells that he can return to the ring and does want to try and get back to do it again and said that since the business is what it is, he feels that it won’t be as dangerous as one would think. He then noted that the only time that he’s ever had any discomfort in his chest area in his life, was a few days prior to the heart attack when he was in Aruba for an independent wrestling show and that it was a little discomfort that lasted 4-5 minutes, which he believed was indigestion and noted that on the day of WWE RAW, he felt fine all throughout the show and going over the show and all he can remember from the show is the first segment and doesn’t even remember the match that he wrestled when he teamed with Randy Orton to take on Dolph Ziggler and CM Punk and said that he watched the match and it felt as if he was watching a match from 10 years ago and that the last thing he remembers vividly was CM Punk and Bret Hart talking in the ring and then he woke up in the hospital and said then shared a joke about how he didn’t see any bright lights or dead relatives, to which Michael Cole, who he called a very good friend, joked that it was because Lawler was heading in the other direction.
Lawler then said that he feels fine and that his blood pressure today was the lowest that he can ever remember it being in his life and that he’s on a monitor that has to follow him until tomorrow morning and then concluded the press conference, once again thanking fans for their support.
