Hijo del Santo did charity work with the Wildcoast Charity this week and told the press that he wouldn’t be having his spinal surgery any time in the distant future because he said that he wants to wait out the rest of the year to see if his bones can regenerate on their own without having surgery which echoes the sentiments of his wife Gabriela Obregon earlier in the year. Santo said that he has done just about everything he has ever wanted to do inside the ring and wants to focus on his son’s career. Santo then talked about his Todos x Todos promotion and said that he won’t be running any shows at least until the World Cup is over with this Summer because that will overshadow any other sports event in Mexico during that time. Santo said that he now must find a new venue to run in Mexico City because AAA (which he called a circus) has their deal with Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera.

One of the more underrated rudos of his era, Dick Angelo aka Luis Ortiz Mejia passed away Friday at the age of 85 due to an undisclosed illness. Angelo started his formal training in 1952 under the teaching of Gonzalo Avendaño Aguilar at the Gimnasio Super for Asociación Deportiva Mexicana under the direction of Raul Romero and in that same year he made his debut at Arena Marvel against Carlos Ortega. Angelo bounced around for the next 4 years before joining CMLL in 1956 where his first really big feud was against Shadito Cruz (father of the Brazos) and in fact he took his hair in the very first hair match on a Tuesday night CMLL card at Arena Coliseo. Angelo was working at this time as Rudy Garcia and it wasn’t too long before he turned rudo and started feuding with the heroes of the day and in 1964 he lost his first hair match to Rolando Vera at Arena Coliseo. He would then start traveling abroad working across South America before returning to Mexico where legendary referee Roberto Rangel suggested that he don a mask and become Dick Angelo which would become his calling card for the rest of his career. As Dick Angelo he again traveled abroad working in countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Peru, & El Salvador where his biggest victory was taking the mask of the El Jaguar de Colombia who unmasked as Lorenzo Palpilla in Guatemala on 3/12/67. Angelo also went to France where he defeated big stars there like The Beast & Jose Azzari. Angelo would eventually come back to Mexico where he started feuding with the legendary El Santo leading to him losing his mask at Arena Xochmilco on 11/20/68. Angelo would continue on without his mask having a strong career before going on a streak of losing his hair to Estrella Blanca on 7/18/76 at Arena Puebla, Rudy Valentino on 3/18/78 in Irapuato, and then on 4/29/79 to the rising star Black Terry at Arena Naucalpan. Angelo would work throughout the 80’s under that name and then donned a mask in other gimmicks in other countries as well before retiring. QEPD Dick Angelo.
