According to a report from Sports Illustrated, Mauro Ranallo, the current lead broadcaster for boxing on Showtime and the play-by-play commentator for New Japan Pro Wrestling coverage on AXS TV will be joining WWE SmackDown next month when the show moves to the USA Network, with the announcement expected to be made official tomorrow by the WWE.

Ranallo told Sports Illustrated that Michael Cole reached out to him by e-mail only a month ago to gauge his interest in an announcing role with WWE. For those wondering, Ranallo will maintain his role as the voice of Showtime’s boxing coverage, but will also be available for WWE RAW and pay-per-views and is seen as a pretty significant signing for the WWE and the start of big changes for the WWE SmackDown brand going forward.
