In an update on original plans for the newly instated WWE Universal Championship, prior to Roman Reigns being suspended for his first WWE Wellness Policy violation, AJ Styles was penciled in to win the WWE Universal Championship as the WWE SmackDown brand’s Champion, according to a report from The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The report notes that Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship would have been the WWE RAW brand’s top match at WWE SummerSlam, while Finn Bálor would have faced off with Chris Jericho and that following all that went down, if Finn Bálor had not been injured coming out of the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view, then he would have defended the title against Kevin Owens at Clash of Championship before facing Owens and Chris Jericho in a triple threat match at the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.
