Tonight is WWE’s 4th annual Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event, and the event is on the edge of a new era in WWE. That new era would be ushered in by the creation of two new stars, as well as one on the road to being the next, the first time such has happened, to this extent, since WrestleMania 21 in 2005. Think about that for a second, 7.5 years since multiple stars were made, with those two being John Cena and Batista. Another startling fact, besides that only one of those two stars remain in WWE today, only three new main eventers had been created since then with one retired, three. Those three, all age 30 or older, are: CM Punk (34), Daniel Bryan (31), and Sheamus (34), with the one retired being Edge (38), still that’s a staggering number. Nonetheless WWE is on the verge of adding some much needed new blood to the main event scene, if the pay-per-view goes in that direction.

First-off: the WWE Championship match, which as we all know, is CM Punk defending in his 343rd day as champion, against an undefeated, unmatched, and unquestioned powerhouse in Ryback. With this match, WWE put themselves, one would think, inadvertently in a predicament in which one of two streaks come to a head inside one of the most sedistic structures in professional wrestling, the Hell in a Cell. However it’s the fact that Ryback has only been active on the roster since April of this year, that makes it necessary for him to win this match. Ryback has come into his own in the last 6 weeks or so, while interracting with CM Punk, and in the process went from a guy with so-so fan support, to one of the top babyfaces in the company with unanimous fan support, not an easy task when Punk was still getting a majority of cheers despite a major heel turn this summer. A loss for Ryback would take far more to recover from than a loss to the champion would, as Punk still has the Survivor Series and TLC pay-per-view events, as well as several RAW broadcasts to regain the WWE Championship and presumably still face The Rock at the Royal Rumble. Ryback however, has been built up as an unstoppable force which an insatiable appetite for destruction, and losing in his first pay-per-view main event would be catastrophic and would take many, many months to rebuild him.

Speaking of fresh faces for the main event, this brings us to the World Heavyweight Championship match tonight, and as we know, Sheamus defends against Big Show, a man in the midst of a complete character transformation. Similar to Mark Henry a year ago, Big Show has been unstoppable, except for in championship matches, which is where Henry and Show differ, the best way to complete and solidify the aforementioned transformation of Show, is winning the World Championship, especially defeating a champion like Sheamus, who I can count on one hand how many times he’s lost, and has been one of the longest-reigning World Champions in WWE history as well.

Scenario #2 would be Dolph Ziggler, a man who has stated for almost two months now that he would cash-in his Money in the Bank briefcase at the conclusion of the match between Sheamus and Big Show, and has teased cashing-in several times as well. Ziggler is a man who deserves to climb to the top of the ladder and be the main eventer we all know he’s destined to be, and is also a guy who has busted his a** to become one for nearly 7 years now, since debuting as Kerwin White’s caddy in late 2005. WWE is in desperate need of another top-tier/main event caliber talent, so why not a guy who sells like no other, and has been compared to legends such as Shawn Michaels and Curt Hennig among others, and also receives rave reviews from his peers in the back as numerous talents want to work with Ziggler because how well he makes his opponents look.

Lastly, and to a lesser extent, another talent who’s been majorly overlooked, and has a chance to become the shining star of the midcard, and become “THE guy” of the midcard, is Kofi Kingston. Tonight he faces off against The Miz, who is invoking his rematch clause after losing on WWE Main Event two weeks ago. Kofi was seemingly in the position, minus the briefcase, that Ziggler finds himself in about 3 years ago with a high-profile feud with Randy Orton then an impressive showing in the 2010 Rumble match, and even an opportunity at the WWE Championship, but then fell back to the depths of the midcard, and lower card, before being thrown into a couple of random tag teams, and made irrelevant. Kofi is a talent who has exceptional in-ring skills, and terrific mic skills, and has been one of WWE’s most popular stars since his debut in 2008. After beating a former WWE Champion in Miz tonight, why not continue to showcase Kofi as being the main star of the midcard of WWE, build him up with a few serious feuds, maybe have Kofi feud with Heath Slater and his 3MB, and/or maybe reignite a feud between Kofi and Alberto Del Rio, or a feud with stars like Wade Barrett, or Tensai, or have Henry return and feud with Kofi, establish him as a potential star that he could be, and that I think he could be. Then when Money in the Bank rolls around again in 2013, give Kofi the briefcase, and then maybe a year from now I can have this column again only be about Kofi being on the verge of grabbing the proverbial brass ring.
