Former WWE superstar AJ Lee (April Jeanette Mendez) as well as Aimee Garcia have signed a deal to pen the screenplay for the sequel to the 47 Ronin movie, according to a report from Deadline Hollywood.

The original film, released in 2013, which starred Keanu Reeves, made $151,783,839 worldwide.

Speaking about the announcement, Garcia had the following to say, “AJ and I are excited to write a diverse and inclusive action film. Director Ron Yuan’s vision to blend martial arts, horror, cyber-punk and action was inspiring and we’d like to thank the team at 1440 for being so supportive”. Mendez followed that up with the following, “As creators of color, we’re honored to be part of a modern, multicultural story with powerful female leads.”

Mendez and Garcia have worked together before on comic book works, including Wonder Woman, as well as GLOW, based on the Netflix series, while a film adaptation of Mendez’s memoir Crazy Is My Super Power is also in development.
