All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan took part in a media call today to promote this Sunday’s AEW Revolution pay-per-view. After a few issues of getting Khan on the call, he mentioned that tonight will be a big night for All Elite Wrestling and pro wrestling.
The first question asked was if Tony could give any insight into the big announcement. Khan said that he has given hints and thinks that it is a major announcement which will affect pro wrestling and the wrestlers, noting that it will be great to give the fans the announcement during tonight’s episode. The next question asked about AEW expanding their viewership in the African American community to which Khan mentioned that diversity is very important to him and that they are pushing African American talent across their shows. The next question asked about plans for the next television deal. Khan said that he is happy where they are and are planning to be as strong as they possibly can be when their next deal comes up.
The next question asked if AEW (more specifically Dynamite) plan to emanate more from cities on the West Coast and areas in Canada. Khan said that he is looking to do more shows in the West and noted that due to the pandemic, a lot of the dates that the company are doing now are make-up dates for those that were scheduled before the pandemic. The next question asked if Tony believes that Revolution this Sunday would set the tone for the rest of the year. Khan said that he believes that will happen and ran down all of the events that are scheduled to take place over the weekend. The next question asked about AEW having a big roster and having people join, while people leave, specifically Cody Rhodes. Khan said that it is a big challenge, but that it is also a good challenge and thinks that they have the best roster around, and is thankful for his television partners in giving them an extra show. Khan said that it was sad to see Cody Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes depart the company, noting that he appreciated the both of them and all that they did for AEW and wishes them both the best in what they choose to do next.
The next question asked about the Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker match. Khan said that he expects a great match just like their last one, which a lot of people thought was a Match of the Year candidate and said that he is excited to see it happen again this time for the title. The next question asked what the plans are to get the AEW library onto a streaming service, noting that younger fans prefer streaming as opposed to the traditional television viewing. Khan said that it is something that they are looking to do, noting that they work with one of the greatest tech and media companies in the world, and he thinks that there will be potentially some great opportunities to work together, noting that he agrees with the statement in regards to younger viewers and streaming. The next question asked about wrestlers entering to music from the new album and whether that will continue. Khan said that he is leaving that choice entirely up to the wrestlers as some want to use them, while others do not. Khan noted that Powerhouse Hobbs likes his new song, but probably prefers his older music, whereas Scorpio Sky has said that he is interested in using his new song. Khan noted that it will be a case-by-case basis and that he does not ask anyone to come out to a song that they don’t like.
The next question asked how difficult it is to manage such a big roster with only three hours of television. Khan said that AEW Rampage coming along helped tremendously, but that it is always challenging, but at the same time it is a great thing as you would rather have a large, great roster than the alternative. The next question asked about Khan putting together the card for the show. Khan said that it is probably the most challenging ever for this show as it will be stacked and expects it to be a great four hour show. Khan said that he will be putting a lot of thought into the match order, but that something like that is a great challenge to have. The next question asked Khan about running Double or Nothing at the T-Mobile Arena, to which Khan mentioned that the T-Mobile Arena is a top venue. The next question asked if there were any plans to bring All Elite Wrestling to the United Kingdom. Khan said that he can’t announce anything, but that he is definitely looking to go there and wants to bring AEW to Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC. Khan said that he has driven all around England as the GM of Fulham, but that he definitely wants to bring AEW to the UK, however there is nothing that he can announce at this time in regards to that.
The next question asked if Jeff Hardy was indeed AEW bound. Khan said that everyone shouldn’t consider that it is a done deal, however he likes Jeff a lot. Khan said that as soon as he is free and clear from the other company (in reference to WWE), then he would love to have a discussion with him on coming in, noting that he is a friend of his and a great person. The next question asked if Cody Rhodes had a renewal option in his contract and if he did, why wasn’t that exercised. Khan said that he tried to reach a longer deal beyond the option years and thought that they were close, but it did not happen and said that he did not want to keep someone there that did not want to be there. Khan said that he has a lot of respect for Cody and they parted ways. The next question asked about the AEW concert. Khan said that Mikey Rukus will be playing live for the fans this weekend and noted that names like RJ City will also be there. The next question asked about trios Championship. Khan said that he likes trios and will be blunt in thinking that it will work a lot better when Kenny Omega comes back, hinting at future plans in the works. The next question asked about MJF’s recent promo on AEW Dynamite and what level of trust goes into letting a talent do that. Khan said that he never takes for granted when someone does something great and he appreciated it, putting over MJF’s work and said that MJF is a talented guy who shows that talent all of the time.
The next question asked if there is any chance that Britt Baker vs. Thunder Rosa headlines AEW Revolution. Khan said that Britt delivers when she is in the main event, however it will not be the main event and that ‘Hangman’ Adam Page vs. Adam Cole will get the main event slot. Khan put over how he believes in Adam Cole and that when he signed him, they spent over 4 hours on the phone talking about the company. Khan said that the card is so loaded that it has been a challenge to do the card, since there are so many strong matches. The next question asked about the possibility of AEW signing Cesaro. Khan said that he likes him a lot and met him a few years ago, noting that he is a great athlete, a great wrestler and a good guy, while he is very smart as well and is open to the possibility of Cesaro joining the company. The next question asked about the AEW video game. Khan said that it is being worked on and that he thinks that the wait will pay off well for the company.
The next question asked Khan whether he feels any pressure to fill the void without Cody Rhodes at AEW Revolution as this will be the first pay-per-view without him. Khan said that he doesn’t and has done a few shows already without Cody Rhodes being here. Khan said that he knows that he can do a great show without him, just like they did great shows when working together. Khan said that he will miss Cody being around in a lot of ways, but not in feeling pressured to put on a good pay-per-view, because they have already done it. The final question was in regards to Orange Cassidy, who the caller compared to Danhausen. Khan said that is far from the case and that while they both engage on social media, they are very different in the ring. The same caller asked if Khan would use the net positive metric when it comes to bringing someone in. Khan said that they have to consider that for sure as someone with an audience already will bring them to All Elite Wrestling with them and that they fit together, but that they are also very different. Khan put over Orange Cassidy, noting that he brings in good ratings, no matter what you think of him and noted that the net positive metric is important to him and that part of why he pushes Orange is that he brings in viewers, Orange is gifted and that Orange can go in the ring. Khan closed out the call by thanking everyone for their time and said that he really appreciated everyone’s time for him to answer their questions and hopes that they enjoy AEW Revolution this Sunday.
