In an update on the Game Changer Wrestling promotion formally requesting to be released from their contract with IndependentWrestling.TV, GCW promoter Brett Lauderdale indicated that the issue appears to arise from who owns the master tapes for GCW events.

A statement released by Lauderdale on the issue in a series of posts on his Twitter account reads, “Re; ownership of masters: There is nothing in any contract that states IWTV/SMW assumes ownership of masters. Furthermore, when I inquired on this less than 1 year ago, IWTV ownership re-confirmed that GCW owned the masters of every show it paid for (99% of them) much in the same sense as any wrestler or business asks to be released from a contract, we are asking the same. We are NOT asking for people to cancel subscriptions and will not do so. There are a lot of wrestlers and companies that benefit from the platform. We are at an impasse and things have been very frustrating for everyone. I am still hoping things can be worked out and everyone can win, I just want a fair/better arrangement for GCW, its wrestlers and its crew.

I know there are people that think GCW is a giant operation with a huge bankroll, but we’re not. GCW is owned and financed by 1 person (me), who operates out of his home and has 0 employees. I am a single father and small business owner that works 24/7 to support a lot of people, reviewing contracts and filing for copyrights is expensive and we’ve never had to hire a lawyer until recently. Our profile has grown quickly and we are working hard to adjust to these needs on a daily basis. 95% of everything at GCW is done in-house, I hand-write every merch label, I receive and reply to every e-mail and DM we get, I purchase every flight and hotel myself on my outdated Android, I drive to the post office three times a week in a s***ty car with a check engine light that never goes out. I have a small team that pours their heart and soul into everything they do to help GCW and they do it because they believe in what we are doing.

We aren’t perfect and I/we are as flawed as anyone, but we are actively working to do good in wrestling and bring everyone along with us. This is not a call for sympathy or an excuse, this is an acknowledgement that I/we are human and get frustrated and emotional when I feel like my company deserves better. In this new world, our existing agreement with IWTV isn’t sustainable and we need a change. We have tried to seek a resolution privately, but we’re not having much luck. IWTV will thrive with or without GCW, we just want the opportunity to do the same.”
